More than 1,000 scientists attended the IWGSC’s main workshop, co-chaired by Kellye Eversole and Catherine Feuillet, on Saturday 9 January.

The highlight of the workshop was the presentation by Curtis Pozniak of the newly completed IWGSC whole genome assembly and the strategy to utilize this new resource as an additional tool to complete the reference sequence for all 21 wheat chromosomes.

Asaf Distelfeld presented his work on the assembly of the wild emmer wheat genome. Hana Šimková talked about how BioNano maps can be used to improve BAC-contig physical maps and validate sequence assembly. Hong-Qing Ling presented the latest results of his team on sequencing the genome of Triticum urartu. Aleksey Zimin presented his work on the assembly of Aegilops tauschii. Pierre Sourcille presented how his team used the 5BS physical map to characterize the SKr crossability locus. And Tingting Zhu, IWGSC Early Career Awardee, presented her work on the evolution of genome structure in polyploid wheat by comparing wheat and Aegilops tauschii whole genome BioNano maps.

At the business meeting on Saturday 9 January, the IWGSC presented early career and leadership awards. Tingting Zhu received the IWGSC Early Career Award following the presentation of her work earlier in the day at the IWGSC main workshop. Jan Dvorak (in absentia) and Ming-Cheng Luo received an IWGSC Outstanding Leadership Award in recognition and appreciation of their leadership in completing the reference sequence for the Ae. tauschii. John Jacobs and Bayer CropScience (BSC) were awarded an IWGSC Outstanding Leadership Award in recognition and appreciation of their leadership for advancing significantly the IWGSC efforts to complete the reference sequence of the bread wheat genome.

The last official event organized by the IWGSC was the Standards & Protocols workshop, co-chaired by Jane Rogers and Frederic Choulet, on Tuesday 12 January.
