With this project, we aim to provide a critical and substantial contribution for the sequencing and analysis of the huge and extremely complex bread wheat genome in collaboration and coordination with the international wheat initiative and in particular with the International Wheat Genome Sequencing Initiative (IWGSC). Both worldwide as well within Germany, wheat is of upmost agro-economic importance. Since the 1950s, the major fraction of wheat yield increase is attributable to breeding efforts and achievements. For further qualitative and quantitative improvement and increase, genomics based high-throughput methods will provide an essential foundation. Due to size and complexity of the wheat genome this foundation has been notoriously difficult to develop. However, international initiatives as well as latest technological developments and breakthroughs enable us now to achieve this goal in the foreseeable future.

In this project we will (I) sequence two wheat chromosomes (chromosomes 6A and 2D respectively) as a contribution to the international wheat genome sequencing efforts, (II) carry out the bioinformatics analysis of all 21 wheat chromosomes from the international efforts as well as (III) provide the integration and communication of the analytical wheat genome data generated in cooperation with the international wheat genome data resources and initiatives.
