Abstract

The IWGSC activity in Australia will target key regions of interest to Australian growers. The project aims to engage relevant Australian stakeholders to carry out next generation genome sequencing studies on wheat 7A as well as utilize genetically structured populations to assign DNA physical maps, genome sequences and phenotypes to genetic locations. The project has leveraged the GRDC funding with additional funds from the BioPlatforms Australia because it will target chromosomal regions and priority targets such as components of yield (grain weight, grain number, specific agronomic traits such as drought tolerance, preharvest sprouting) that are crucial for the future of wheat production in Australia. Genetic components of yield have been identified in the proximal regions of both short and long arms of chromosome 7A. Additional funding support for the project has also come through a PhD student scholarship and operating support and this significant since genome level analyses are now widely considered to provide the basis for high level research activity in complex crops such as wheat. The outputs of this project will include a physical DNA map of chromosome 7A and genome level sequence for 1-2 Mb sections of the genome located in regions of interest. Specific outputs include:

  • New molecular markers to validate association of genes encoding components of yield to demonstrable improvements in yield in a range of Australian germplasm
  • Identification of new genes that can be targeted for breeding
  • Engagement with the IWGSC in order to target any chromosomal regions of interest to Australian agriculture (not just chromosome 7A)
  • Renewal of university-based interest in the study of wheat and hence the leveraging of new funds and student talent into the area to build a future for the industry.
