The European Triticeae Genomics Initiative (ETGI) was launched by the IWGSCEuropean co-chair C. Feuillet www.clermont.inra.fr/umr1095 and N. Stein of Germany representing the barley genomic community. In September 2004, during the 4th Plant Genomic European Meeting (PlantGEM), the first ETGI workshop was organized. The central aim of ETGI is the coordination of European efforts and contributions towards the development of genomic resources for the Triticeae species (wheat, barley and rye), including genome-wide physical maps of barley and wheat that would serve as a foundation for high-throughput gene/trait isolation and subsequently, targeted or full genome sequencing. The ETGI will serve as a platform to define strategies and develop coordinated projects for submission to national and European funding programs, as well as participating fully in the IWGSC.The IWGSCactivities in Europe will continue to be coordinated with the ETGI for scientific, political, and funding support.
