Sequencing the genome of the French wheat variety Renan

Webinar: Sequencing the genome of the French wheat variety Renan

On 29 September 2022, the IWGSC organized a webinar entitled "Sequencing the genome of the French wheat variety Renan" presented by Frédéric Choulet (GDEC, INRAE, University Clermont Auvergne, France)

Presenter

Frédéric Choulet, GDEC, INRAE, University Clermont Auvergne, France

Outline

We sequenced the genome of the French bread wheat cultivar Renan, one of the most used varieties for organic farming. A set of 3M reads larger than 50kb were obtained, representing a 14x depth of coverage, using Oxford Nanopore Technology. Combined with Illumina reads, Bionano maps, and HiC data, we assembled 21 chromosome pseudomolecules. To advance towards building a wheat pangenome, we optimized the procedures of gene annotation so that the genes predicted in the reference cultivar Chinese Spring were mapped accurately along the Renan chromosomes using MAGATT pipeline. Results about the Renan genome assembly, annotation, and comparison with the other available wheat genomes will be presented. Considerations about wheat pangenomics will be discussed.
